ResumoFriction and wear of AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel implanted with nitrogen by ion implantation (II) and plasma immersion ion implantation (PI3) were studied in this work. Ion implantations at room temperature were carried out at fluences from 2.6 x 1015 to 4.9 x 1017 N+.cm-2 to produce a nitrogen plateau like (300 nm deep) at nominal atomic concentrations ranging from 1% to 27%. The PI3 was performed at 320°C and 400°C to avoid chromium depletion at grain boundaries and at different treatment times. The mechanical properties were characterized by instrumented indentation and reciprocating sliding tests under dry unlubricated condition at room temperature and low humidity. Wear rates were calculated from the resultant groove profiles obtained by perfilometry. Although ion implantation increased surface hardness, it had the deleterious effect of increasing wear. The friction coefficient variation with sliding distance suggests there is rupture of the ion implanted layer, which is rapidly worn out and the observed increase in wear rate is due to a three body abrasion process. On the other hand, samples submitted to PI3 showed a decrease in wear with temperature and time. There is a smooth increase in the friction coefficient with sliding distance, suggesting the deeper modified layer produced by the PI3 process is more effective to improve wear resistance of AISI 304 steels.
